In 1973 and 1974, Chessie System painted a number of cabooses
into unique and vibrant color schemes with safety minded slogans
adorning the sides as a part of its Employee Safety
Awareness Program. In a further effort to increase awareness,
they were used in an employee spotting contest, and the winner
received a clock radio. Many of these cabooses made it to
the CSX roster in the 1980s. CSX was formed through the 1986
mergers of Chessie System and Seaboard System / Family Lines,
and continues to operate today across more than 21,000 miles
of track in the Eastern United States.
