This
Bangor & Aroostook 40’ boxcar with Bettendorf trucks was built
in 1954 by Ameri-
can Car & Foundry, and decorated in the “State of Maine” red,
white and blue scheme.
Bangor & Aroostook was formed in 1891 and quickly grew to
have an extensive rail
network throughout Maine. In the late 1890s BAR began to transport
potatoes, and by
WWII this made up over half of the revenue for the railroad, while
the remaining portion
was from chemical and industrial shipments. In the late 1980s,
the reduction of industry
along BAR lines forced the railroad into bankruptcy.
