Great Northern Railway
in the Pacific Northwest by Jeff Wilson
Part #KAL-01102 N Scale Supply Price:
The Golden Years of the Great Northern Railway
The Great Northern Railway has long been associated with its first president, James J. Hill, and the Empire Builder - the luxury passenger train named after him. The railroad's line through the Cascades and Rockies was a vision of Hill's, and he worked hard to see the line completed through to Seattle and to develop traffic - both domestic and import - to support the line.

The Golden Years of GN passenger service came just after World War II, with the introduction of the streamlined Empire Builder. The orange-and-green trains ran through some of the most dramatic scenery in the Pacific Northwest, including Glacier National Park, the Cascades, and the Rockies. The railroad followed that train with an improved all-new Builder in 1951 and the addition of full-length domes in 1955. This book highlights the Empire Builder along with the other lesser-known but equally important trains, including the Fast Mail and the many freight and local passenger trains of the Northwest.
