Trailer
on flat car service has existed since the 1940s as a part of North
American railroading.
Although intermodal trailer traffic would explode in the late
1980s and early 1990s with railroads perfecting hotshot intermodal
freight operations. The primary commodity of early intermodal
trailers was mail and dry non-perishable goods.
Advancements in refrigeration units in the late 1990s would allow
refrigerated trailers with food, pharmaceuticals and other perishable
goods to join the list of commodities traveling via intermodal
freight service.
The Atlas 53 Modern Reefer Trailer is a replica of the extremely
popular Utility 3000R refrigerated trailer prototype. The 3000R
has been the most widely produced 53 refrigerated trailer
since its introduction in 1999.
3000R trailers can be seen on almost all intermodal trailer trains
from 1999 onwards, making it a critical model for modern intermodal
modeling!
