Days ago the Denver/Front Range got in excess of 24" of snow
in 24 hours. Today we caught a few trains on the DRGW Moffat Line |
 |
| UP
#5604 leads six engines and a short manifest train westbound. Here
is crosses Colorado 72, it has just left the Big 10 curves and is
heading upgrade towards tunnel #1. |
 |
| Just
to the north of the previous picture the train starts the climb
towards tunnel #1. |
 |
| The
grade really is this severe, I am holding the camera level. This
train really doesn't need six engines to get up the Moffat line,
probably 1 or 2 would be sufficient. The UP typically moves large
amounts of power to Grand Junction this way. |
 |
| A
coal train was waiting on Leyden siding to get into Denver. The
crew went dead so they sent the taxi for them and left the train.
|
 |
| Blue
Mountain grade crossing is just south of Tunnel #1 and the Big Ten
curves. When we arrived this manifest was sitting here waiting to
change the crew. |
 |
| A
few minutes later they closed the door and started rolling. The
train S curves to the left and then back to the right. You can see
the end of the train just to the right of the nose of the engine. |
 |
| A
UP Flag Unit heading towards Denver. |
 |
| While
we were waiting on the crew change a coal train made it thru the
Big Ten curves into Clay siding. Here it is rolling towards Blue
Mountain road. |
 |
| Rocky
Flats, what was the most poluted square mile in the world, is visible
in the background. |
 |
| As
the train climbs towards Tunnel #1 it crosses our view twice. |
 |
| The
eastbound train we saw get a new crew at Blue Mountain is now rolling
again. Its past Rocky siding heading to Leyden siding. |
 |
| Crossing
Colorado 72. |
