Intermodal Containers
Intermodal is the hottest
thing in railroading. Shipping, trucking and rail lines have combined
with the goal of providing reduced commodity handling, and shorter time
between destinations than previous methods of handling less than shipload
quantity cargos.
The original containers developed by
shipping companies were 20' or 40' long with a 96" width, and are
stacked with IBCs (interbox connectors) stored in a box on the
stack cars themselves. US shippers required a larger container to compete
with 48' over the road trucks. The lighter, higher capacity 48 became
a new option in the highly competitive domestic shipping market.
