Illinois Central received two batches of these cars from two different builders. The ones with the black bottoms are from American Car & Foundry, and the all grey are from Pullman-Standard. the primary use of this style of covered hopper was cement, but they were also used for grain, sand and chemical service. Sometime after the publication of the 1969 Equipment Register but before the merger with GM&O, these cars were renumbered from the 79000 series to the 700000 series seen here.
