| Norfolk & Western 2 Bay Rib-Sided Covered Hopper New: November 2002
In 1964, N&W tripled in size by merging (or leasing) Nickel Plate Road, Wabash, Pittsburgh & West Virginia, and Akron Canton & Youngstown. What made the merger so odd was that N&W didn't directly connect with any of them! N&W had to buy Pennsylvania's Columbus-Sandusky line to connect with it's new properties. Many believe that Pennsy engineered the deal since they had influence over N&W and controlled Wabash. The merger kept the Nickel Plate out of the hands of any line that could threaten the Pennsylvania. N&W inherited these "open triangle" ACF covered hoppers from Nickel Plate and Wabash (plus 2 cars from Virginian, merged four years earlier.) The paint scheme depicted here began to appear in 1971, replacing the round "hamburger" logo. These gray cars have black and white lettering and are available in singles and 3 packs with a total of four different road numbers.
