Southern Pacific bought these cars in 1953 and designated them H-70-10 class. This was the only class of covered hoppers on the SP to have the open triangles in the sides. The cars were originally delivered with roman lettering and the round logo. The "reduced billboard" logos shown on these cars feature the gothic lettering that began to replace the serifed roman lettering on all SP cars in the mid 1950's. SP experimented with different colors of lettering on their covered hoppers and these four road numbers represent 3 variations that appeared on the prototype. The all red cars have not been available in N scale since the 1970's and the red and black scheme has never been available in N scale.
