Cement is a commodity that NEEDS to be dry! The ACF design was built with this in mind. The hopper doors on top and bottom sealed tightly against moisture, and effectively blocked the cement from becoming wet, and drying to a never to be opened lump. 70 tons of cement would be a lot to just chip out of a car!
Missouri Portland Cement is painted with a distinctive red over gray scheme that was quite unusual. The cars would normally be weathered from the load/unload process, but the red lettering would still shine through.
