This two bay hopper is based on the 1932 design from ACF that was built from the mid 30's to the mid 60's by more than 10 different car builders and railroads. Illinois Central received two batches of these cars from two different builders. The ones with the black bottoms are from American Car & Foundry, and the all gray are from Pullman-Standard. The primary use of this style of hopper was cement, but they were also assigned to grain or silica service. These cars were later repainted into the Big IC logo. Some survive today in sand service, and in ballast service.
