On July 1,
1894, the first train pulled into Cripple Creek, Colorado, the last
of the state's great old mining boomtowns. A century later, as this
historic location is beginning a new economic revival, the short-lived
Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad is remembered as one of the
most colorful of Colorado's narrow gauge lines. Built up rugged
Phantom Canyon, its less than 50 mile route proved a severe test
of mountain railroading.
