Fairbanks Morse Train Master

Prototype Information
127 of the Fairbanks Morse Train Master Road Switchers were produced from April 1953 until June 1957 (105 were US and 22 were for Canada). The engines came with a 2,400 horsepower 12-cylinder opposed-piston diesel engine. This design allowed for two pistons per cylinder. The piston surfaces faced each other, this eliminated the need for an expensive cylinder head. Unfortunately the design also called for two crankshafts, one on the bottom and top. This caused for a complicated gearing arrangement to connect the two shafts. The design was developed under US Navy contract for surface and submarines ships. Ultimately the design did not provide a market advantage and Fairbanks Morse left the US market in 1958 and stopped production completely in 1963.

DCC Ready or w/DCC Decoder: All of the Atlas TrainMasters are DCC Ready, this means that a DCC Decoder can be easily installed. The TrainMasters are available both with and without a factory installed DCC Decoder
